The purpose of the module is to enable the students to explain the fundamental elements of general linguistics, to carry out a phonetic, phonologic and orthographical transcription of a Kinyarwanda text.

Brief description of aims and content
The module aims at equipping the students with the basic notions and concepts in English Language and Linguistics. It serves as a foundation module that covers the basic issues and approaches in the study of human languages in general and in English language in particular. Its content covers properties of human language, definition of linguistics, branches of linguistics, including theoretical linguistics, historical linguistics, psycholinguistics and how linguistics relates to other disciplines. The module also covers aspects of the grammar of English, phonetics and phonology.

Brief description of aims and content
The purpose of the module is to enable the students to hold a speech and to write in a good Kinyarwanda in any circumstances of communication avoiding code switching, code mixing and code shifting, to express her/his ideas in a logic way by writing or speaking; to identify and characterize the main elements of Kinyarwanda Culture.
