The Property and Land Law module introduces students to the fundamental legal principles governing ownership, use, transfer, and regulation of property—particularly immovable property (land). It explores both statutory and customary frameworks that define how rights over land and other forms of property are acquired, exercised, and protected. The module examines core concepts such as ownership, possession, leases, mortgages, servitudes, and land registration systems, with a special focus on national legislation and policies such as the Rwandan Land Law. Students will also analyze land disputes, land reforms, and the role of land law in promoting economic development, equity, and environmental protection. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with the legal reasoning and practical skills necessary to address property-related legal issues in both private and public law contexts.
